WE COULDN'T THINK OF ANYONE BETTER TO HELP US BRING THIS CAMPAIGN TO LIFE!

READ OUR INTERVIEW WTH ASHA BELOW, WHERE WE CATCH UP ON ALL THINGS MUSIC
AND DISCUSS THE MOMENTS THAT ENCOURAGED HER TO DREAM BIG ...

1. Introduce yourself
and your story…

I'm Asha Gold and I’m a singer
and songwriter from West
London.
I’ve been releasing music for
the past 18 months. When I left
school, I finally had the time
to turn my attention to
developing a unique sound,
discovering who I wanted to be
as an artist, and figuring out
what I wanted to represent.
Since my first single ’Too
Good’ I’ve been growing out
loud, learning every day, and
connecting with listeners all
over the world.

2. What’s your music love story?

Music has always been present in my life - from a young age I sang musical
theatre songs (trying to replicate the Beyoncés and Tracys of Dreamgirls
and Hairspray). But I started to take music seriously in secondary school
when I completed my classical/jazz training in piano, drum kit
and percussion.

I began to play percussion in all sorts of bands and orchestras, which
taught me the joy of sharing music (whereas practicing for music exams
was quite a lonely process). There weren’t very many percussionists or
drummers in my school, so I was constantly dragged into concerts last
minute, having to sight-read the scores and wing it! All of this had taken up
so much of my time that it was only after school that I realised that I loved
storytelling, and that I could pursue music and my love for performing as
a vocal artist.

3. Your music has a
really fresh and
unique feel to it,
which genre would
you say best
describes it?

I’d say my music is pop leaning
R&B, but I think the beauty of
the way we discover and listen
to music today is that artists
are so much less defined by
genre. My sound's always
evolving and I’m constantly
taking inspiration from
complete opposite ends of the
musical spectrum to keep my
sound inventive and fresh.

4. Which artists have been your biggest
musical influence?

Billie Eilish and Lorde have massively inspired me in terms of song writing - I
never want to write a predictable lyric. I have to mention Beyoncé because
she’s truly been my biggest inspiration in terms of performance and career.
I’m aiming high, but I want to reach the level of excellence and creativity
she displays in every live performance, music video, note, and harmony. She
also uses her platform to do so much inside and outside of the music
industry, which I massively admire.

5. Was there a
specific moment that
you decided to
follow your dreams
to pursue a career in
music?

I’d been playing around with
demos and songs written in my
bedroom and emailing/ DM-ing
anyone I could find to try to
build a network. Then the day I
received the demo version of
Too Good, I forwarded it on
to an A&R I was meeting that
week, who said I should release
it. The concept of releasing
something felt wild to me, but I
thought how else can I gain
traction and put myself out
there for people to notice me? I
think that moment coupled
with a few live performances
gave me a certain buzz that I
would be craving forever if I
didn’t pursue this.

6. Talk us through your creative process
when writing music.

The most important thing for me with writing is having conviction in
whatever I’m saying - it has to be authentic. I try to journal every couple of
days so I can gather my thoughts and feelings to write from. Then in the
studio we’ll play around with chords, beats, textures and that sets a rough
mood and tempo for the song - I’m super picky about all of this, especially
chord progressions!

From there I’ll voicenote lots of melodies and jot down lyrics that come
into my head, and it all flows quite naturally on a good day! I’ve definitely
found it hard to stay creative and keep writing in lockdown when I’m
living, sleeping, working and trying to be creative all in the same space.

7. It must all feel
like a whirlwind!
What has been your
biggest wow moment
so far?

It does sometimes feel very
surreal!! It has to be Annie Mac
playing my music for the first
time. She has been a hero of
mine forever, I would tune in at
7pm every evening to listen to
her and if I missed it I’d go back
and find it online. Annie was
always my source for new
music discovery, so for her to
be supporting my music is such a
confidence boost.

8. Tell us a bit about ‘Debut’, the single
featured on our Rainbow Bee campaign video.

Debut is all about those mixed emotions of fear and excitement that come
with falling in love… I’m much better at writing angry songs so writing
something sweet and vulnerable was quite scary for me!

9. Do you have any advice or words of wisdom for those wanting to make it in the music industry?

I’d say to anyone starting out
to always remain authentic to
yourself no matter what
people tell you is ‘marketable’.
Keep working on your sound -
nothing matters more than the
music itself. And don’t sign
anything without a lawyer!

10. Top three ‘sing in the shower’ songs.

Shontelle ‘T-Shirt’, Jordin Sparks and Chris Brown ’No Air’, Beyoncé ‘1+1’-
if they’re not belters what’s the point?!

11. If you could tell
your younger self
one thing, what
would it be?

Stop brushing your curls out
and straightening your hair!

12. Who inspires you to
dream big every day?

My little brother. He’s my
biggest fan and makes me feel
like I can achieve anything.

13. Favourite quote?

‘I am no longer accepting the things I
cannot change. I am changing the things
I cannot accept’

- ANGELA DAVIS

14. What can we
expect next in the
story of Asha Gold?

Expect some exciting acoustic
visuals soon, new tunes to
soundtrack your summer, more
of my music and mental health
podcast, and much much
more… This year feels pivotal
for me, and I’m hoping to keep
building the momentum, honing
my craft and reaching more
people. Stay tuned!
